SUMMARY:Brain Innovation Days: Fast-tracking brain innovation in times of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The last 14 months have been a most testing time for the world in general and for global health in particular. COVID-19 took the world by surprise as weaknesses were exposed in public health systems’ preparedness to face pandemics and we continue to face the consequences over a year on. However\, the emergence of COVID-19 has also succeeded in accelerating innovation in science\, treatments\, healthcare and health management. \nPositive results have been observed where a stronger emphasis on collaboration among different players was placed. From researchers to clinicians to community to biotech\, public-private partnerships were strengthened\, and\, thanks to increased responsiveness from authoritative bodies\, more agile ways of fast-tracking innovation were set in motion. \nThe purpose of this Brain Innovation Days digital session\, the 3rd in the series\, is to explore the positive direct and indirect results of COVID-19 pandemic response and research on the brain innovation ecosystem. The session will feature key opinions leaders\, patient testimonials\, clinicians\, representatives from the EU and WHO level and the industries that were forced to adapt to this rapid change of pace in innovation. \nRegistration is now open\, just click here.

SUMMARY:Brain Innovation Days
DESCRIPTION:The European Brain Council and beLean.net will virtually launch the first Brain Innovation Days on 13 October\, 2020\, with the full on-site event to be held 12-13 October 2021 in Brussels. \n179 million Europeans are currently living with brain disorders and this is to steadily increase as the population ages. Though one in three Europeans are set to live with a brain disease at some point of their life\, neurological and mental alike. In addition\, it is estimated that brain disorders account for up to 45% of total healthcare budgets and this burden is expected to grow. \nDespite the prevalence of brain disorders in Europe\, there is currently no disease modifying treatment available to cure a wide range of mental and neurological conditions. Developing treatments that can significantly improve the lives of those living with brain disorders is extremely challenging. \nYet\, compared to other disease areas\, the pace of innovation in this field has traditionally been hindered by multiple factors\, including the complexity of the brain itself. As a result\, brain treatments remain insufficient and research is disproportionately underfunded compared to other disease areas. We believe enhanced multi-stakeholder engagement in the brain ecosystem is needed to foster dialogue\, exchange knowledge\, accelerate investment in research and innovation\, facilitate business development and showcase on-going work. \nRegister now: here

SUMMARY:FENS Forum 2020 – Special Interest Event: Global Research Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:In the framework of the upcoming FENS Forum 2020\, EBC will co-organize a series of activities within Forum on the topic of Global Research Collaboration\, highlighting the existing partnerships within research—specifically\, brain research—in the European Union\, the United States and Asian countries such as China\, South Korea\, Japan and possibly others. \nThe public Special Interest Event will fall over lunchtime on 13 July\, from 9:30-10:30. It will focus on highlighting the existing partnerships within research—specifically\, brain research—in the European Union\, the United States and Asian countries such as China\, South Korea\, Japan and others. \nFurthermore\, the event will explore and showcase existing global collaboration as well as the potentials for continued expansion and how global research collaboration can support brain research. Various initiatives aimed at reinforcing global research collaboration\, including in the brain research space\, have been launched in recent years. The International Brain Initiative (IBI)\, which brings together the major “brain initiatives” across the globe\, was launched with the ambitious aim of progressing ethical neuroscience research through international cooperation and knowledge sharing. The EBC-led Horizon 2020 project establishing a European Brain Research Area (EBRA) aims to reduce fragmentation in brain research and foster synergies through enhanced coordination of brain research efforts at the EU and global levels. In order to foster alignment and better co-ordination of research strategies across the European brain initiatives\, a Shared European Brain Research Agenda (SEBRA) will be developed under the EBRA project. The SEBRA will focus on research opportunities and research and innovation gaps to be addressed in the field\, priorities for action in the short and long term and research areas that would benefit most from cross – initiatives cooperation. It is through meetings/events such as this one that EBC and EBRA hope to feed into the formation and definition of global cooperation and initiatives with the potential of feeding into a SEBRA. Furthermore\, the EU has launched several Scientific and Technical (S&T) agreements with countries across the globe that provide frameworks for robust research cooperation and enable the development of strategies for enhancing collaboration in a wide range of areas. \nSpeakers from major international brain research organisations will present their ongoing work at the international level\, chaired by EBC President\, Prof. Monica Di Luca. \nMore details to follow. SUMMARY:3rd HBP Curriculum Workshop Series - Neurobiology for non-specialists
DESCRIPTION:3rd HBP Curriculum Workshop Series – Neurobiology for non-specialists \n1-3 July 2019 | Medical University Innsbruck\, Austria \n\n\n \n \nThis workshop especially addresses early-career researchers who are not familiar with the field of neuroscience and/or neurobiology. It covers a wide range of topics from basic neurobiology over cells biology\, electrophysiology to big data handling. Major aspects will be the challenges of data collection and interpretation in a highly complex system. \nThe course aims to provide an understanding of how data is generated in neuroscience and what are the challenges in the interpretation of data. In order to reach this aim\, active researchers will provide insight into modern methods and aspects (including ethics) of research. This will range from histological methods over electrophysiology and EEG to behavioural experiments and protocols yielding large amounts of data\, like phosphoproteomics. Moreover\, lab visits will be offered to those who are not familiar with the settings of a wet lab. Attendants should understand how their training can be useful for neurobiological research and develop a common language with life science researchers. \nThis knowledge will support and stimulate them to use elements of the HBP Research Infrastructure\, such as the Neuroinformatics and Brain Simulation Platform.
